FOX Pro Surfer and the first ASP veteran kicking off with a win was American Damien Hobgood (USA), who won a hard-fought heat along with Bino Lopes (BRA) over J-Bay local Shaun Joubert (ZAF) and the young up and comer, Jesse Mendes (BRA).
“The conditions are really, really good and excellent to compete in,” stated Hobgood. “Without a doubt, I caught one of the best waves I’ve had this year in the world. The waves are perfect, really long lefts and things are classic. Saquarema is incredible, there’s a great area for the surfers, you can really take advantage of the wave and you just have to go out there and do your best. I’m really excited to find such good waves here in Brazil.”
